And further to both, recording the mother by her maiden name didn't mean that the couple were unmarried. It was quite usual in the early registers to use the mother's maiden name, and sometimes said "and his wife ..... (maiden name). In early wills a married woman was often recorded by her maiden name als married name, instead of the other way around (and is indexed under her maiden name), and sometimes only her maiden name was recorded, especially when she was a widow.
It is the same in Scotland, where you can see numerous MIs, wills, etc. with both names, or only the maiden name "spouse of ......".
