Re: MAUGHOLD Quayle KERMEEN (Sue)
In Response To: MAUGHOLD Quayle KERMEEN (Sue) ()

Raymond, the 1861 census entry I posted was a transcript of what was written on the original document, with the ages given as written there.

Yes, you are right that there was a Maughold bapt for Mary dau of Phillip Quayle & Isabella Kermeen on 9 Apr 1820.

Because it was noted in their marriage record that Philip came from Ballaugh, the most likely bapt for him was in Ballaugh on 2 Sept. 1770, son of William Quayle & Margaret Cowley. This date fits his age in the censuses and his burial. Someone on the IGI had claimed this Philip for their marriage, and someone else said the Ballaugh one had died at aged 2 - but no evidence that either of these are correct.

I was hoping that the 1851 census would confirm Philip's place of birth, but unfortunately it said Maughold, which was probably an assumption by the census taker [no bapt for him in Maughold]. There is no evidence that he came from Lezayre - just that he didn't come from Maughold, and at his marriage he was recorded as from Ballaugh. - So I'd try to confirm that by looking at several Quayle Ballaugh wills to see whether he is mentioned as a son "of Maughold".
e.g.
QUAYLE, William 1814 Bal E 1 0106416
QUAYLE, William 1817 Bal E 2 0106419
QUAYLE, William 1822 Bal A 41 0106243
QUAYLE, William 1830 Bal E 1 0106430
[from Brian Lawson's index].

There is a decree for Margaret Quayle als Cowley of Ballaugh in 1783 which should name all the children, so would show whether Philip b. Ballaugh was alive, but too early to show whether he was the one who went to Maughold.

These are the most likely parents for him, but can't be definite without additional information.
