`of Cleator' (Cumb. p.n.). An Eng. family which settled
in the island prior to the `setting of lands' in 1511-15. They
gave their name to the quarterland of Ballacleator in Kirk
Andreas. As was the fashion in the 15th and early 16th
centuries, the Gaelic prefix mac (son) was added. Richard
who assumed the territorial name of Cleter is named in a
grant to S. Bees, A.D. 1200(Reg.SB.).
