Whitehaven was a very important link to the Isle of Man, and yes there were coal boats. There were even Manx news items published in the Whitehaven Gazzette. Lots of Manx miners moved to Whitehaven, and to Barrow in Furness. Many agricultural improvements, both new machinery and knowledge, came via links with West Cumbria.
