Further to Carol's email, can anyone confirm the parentage of John Steele and also if Catherine Fargher was related to the Cowells in any way? The 1881 census shows a John Steele aged 20 living with his mother Charlotte Kelly and grandmother Mary Cowell - even though Charlotte's age is given as 49 (she would have been 55), I'm assuming this is Charlotte Cowell and it is the correct family as all of the birthplaces fit. If she is the mother of John Steele, it appears that he was illegitimate - so who was his father, presumably a Steele? Would it have been customary for him to use Steele rather than Cowell as his surname?
