Re: Callow family
In Response To: Re: Callow family ()

Apologies for not replying sooner, I've been away (visiting the Callows!)

My Father-In-Law is a Callow; His father was one Benjamin Callow born in Braddan in 1914. His father was John William Callow b cir 1875. He married Violet Dumphey 20/12/1900 JW's father is given as William Callow, that's all we know. JWC was a fireman on the Paddles Steamers but family lore says that WC was also a seafarer of some sort and it is beleived he was a "Captain." There appears to be no evidence for this other than a photo (that I've yet to see) of a gentleman with a longish beard dressed in uniform. The assumption is that the uniform is of a ship's captain but like I say there's no evidence to support this and I'm hoping to see this photo in the New Year. On JWC's weddign certificate WC is however listed as a Labourer and was apparently alive at the time which would go counter to the argument that WC could be Sgt Callow.
