GARRETT/COWIN Emigrants to Australia from Lonan, I

Margaret Garrett (1823-93) married Phillip Cowin (1810-52) at Lonan Parish on 6 April 1843. The Census of 1851 has them living at Ballagawne with parents Thomas and Margaret Cowin (nee Karran). Around 1852, they emigrated to Victoria, Australia, soon moved to the Laura district of South Australia and the next generation moved onto the Southern Flinder’s Ranges in the 1870s and the next generation to the Goldfields of Western Australia.

In South Australia, the Cowins farmed in the 1870s with, amongst others, a John Garrett and his family who was related to Margaret Garrett. Also, a William Garrett was present at the marriage of a Cowin girl at Kapunda in 1861. It seems there were many Garretts around Lonan and Laxey including a Thomas Garrett, joiner, at Ballagawne. It is quite probable that several Garretts may have emigrated with the Cowins as I can find limited information on these Garretts from Isle of Man sources.

I am very keen to get more info on the Garretts (pre or post emigration c1852) and would greatly appreciate anything that can be provided. Information on the Cowins and Karrans from Lonan would be welcome also.
