French Silk Merchant

I realise this is a very, very long shot...
Several members of my family (Gellings and Cain/es) look Mediterranean - particularly French. My mum says her Grandmother, Irene Cain, always said that it was because we had a man in our family who was from Lyon, France. She said he was a silk merchant (my grandmother’s family were drapers and milliners so could be where the connection came from) and he moved to the Isle of Man from France with his daughter. I’ve done a lot of work on our family tree and there’s not many born outside of the island - never mind France! My great grandmother also had a French bible but didn’t speak French so we are thinking this might be where this came from.
Does anyone happen to know any thing which might shed some light on this? Any information at all would be gratefully received.

Thank you
Laura
