Re: Kermeen's of Maughold
In Response To: Re: Kermeen's of Maughold ()

Thanks, Col.

I was able to confirm that Ballabarna/Ballaberna was the correct place name for the James Kermeen burial from the directories on Manx Notebook.

Thwaites Guide & Directory 1863 Maughold has Kermeen William, Ballabarna under "Farmers", and Porter's Directory 1889 Maughold has Kermeen Ann, farmer, part of Ballabarna.

I think David mentioned this article before?
"HOW EARLY MANX FAMILIES MIGRATED TO GALVA" from the IOMFHS Journal May 1990? See:
www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/famhist/v12n2.htm

However it is a slight concern that the James Kermeen of Ballabarna buried in 1852 would be expected to be farming there, whereas the 1851 census has (I assume) Michael's James Kermeen aged 66 as a Master Shoe Maker. Possibly he would still be known by the farm name if born there.
