A very strange mixture of churches - St Barnabas was relatively low C of E with the 'vicar' Wm Carpenter (from Ireland) who was a strong evangelical with known anti-Catholic feelings - moved in 1849 to St Judes in Liverpool though for most of his period at St Barnabas was very popular in Douglas (Catholics being mostly Irish at that period were decidely not popular in Douglas) - this period in late 1830s saw the Mormon gaining quite a few Manx converts
