a Robert Charnley ran the Shaftsbury Hotel, Empress Terrace (part of Douglas Promenade - in the 1887 directory a Charnley was running Shaftsbury House on Broadway terrace (which is just off Douglas Prom near the Villa Marina - looks as though they moved but kept name - Shaftsbury house is still advertised - rooms 5s 6d per day in 1904 under the direction of Charnleys (in 1898 run by a Mrs Charnley);
a Richard Charley is buried Douglas Borough cemetery in 1903 age 27 + an Emma Charnley in 1907 aged 34

maybe checking the 1891 + 1901 censuses would help - also a check on newspapers at www.imuseum.im ?
