Re: William Howland of Andreas (c.1813-1892)

I've been trying to work through some of these Bride/Andreas Howlands as I've been trying to find the identity of the John Howland (my 5xG-GF) who married Cath Vaundy in Bride 30 Oct 1744. Please correct me if I have any of this wrong! I'm very interested to find more information about these Howland families.

The 1753 will of Elizabeth/Bessie Howland (als Sayle) mentions her son Patrick Howland and daughter-in-law Margt Howland, her son John Howland and daughter-in-law Kath Howland, and her daughter Mary Howland, and grand daughter Ann Christian. I can't find anything to say with certainty either way that Kath is Cath Vaundy, beyond that the dates make sense and I can't find any other name matches in marriages (I've found nothing at all about Cath Vaundy). I can't work out where Ann Christian fits in to this family.

This family seems not to have been a very happy lot! The niece in Patrick Howland's settlement was Isabel Inch, the illegitimate daughter of his sister, Mary, and Henry Inch (ch 17 Sep 1752 Bri). According to the settlement, she had been living with her uncle for 5 years or so. He makes no mention of his son Ewan or wife Margaret (Kneale), who dies after him, so does this indicate that they are all estranged? Ewan Howland appears to have contested the settlement on Isabel, and then in his will in 1800 cuts out his own son Patrick for not visiting him while he was ill, so presumably there was some estrangement through the next generation as well.

Thank you to all for the information you put on this board!
