Hi David

Having looked at trees on Ancestry, I can’t find any which seem to have the correct census entries apart from Griffin Family Tree (janeyg50) which has the right 1901 census..... I’m assuming that your Alfred Callister married Christian Anna Quayle in 1894.

So Alfred gave his birth year as: 1870 (marriage),1872 in 1891, 1869 in 1901 and 1868 in 1911. Having married a woman who was born in 1862/3 (baptised Jan 1863), he may have added a few years to his age at census time in 1901 and 1911.

When his son Alfred Edward Collister b 1899 married Laura Killey in 1921, he gave his father’s details as Alfred Edward Collister deceased mason. But sometimes people guessed or invented their father’s christian names so may not be reliable.

I can’t find a legitimate birth so started looking at possible illegitimate births.
*********
Here’s a possibility for Alfred Callister in 1871:

1871
26 Hope St, Douglas

Ancestry’s transcription:

Name Age
Elizabeth Collister 49
William Collister 18
Emily Collister 16
Isabella Collister 13
Frances Collister 10
Esther Graham 34
Earnest Alped Graham 2
James Connelly 40
Jno Wm Brown 20

Elizabeth Collister was a widow (from an earlier census, her late husband was a William Collister). Esther Graham was a widow/niece. Ernest Alfred Graham was Esther’s illegit son. Perhaps he spent his early years in this household and thought of the Collisters as his family.
