With ref to “SS Abydos “ and your comments

You may not be aware that there are similarities in the postings about “Quine” (outside our remit) from 16th July last on "Rootschat " to which you and others posted sometimes lengthy replies including the name “Corlett” etc.
(Mrs) C. S. (Suzanne) Quine of Texas posted on an earlier manx board on the same (Quine) subject in April 2000 with a thread stretching through to October in which others told her a number of things.
This was in the earlier times of these boards when people such as Clive Callow were active.
She (Suzanne) later appeared in “Members Interests” in the May 2001 I.O.M.F.H.S. Journal and I have no doubt received more info.

In both threads their have been the usual muddled suggestions and dates etc. by some.

The recent postings by Mike Wilson suggests a connection and I can confirm from our records on “Corlett”
the following:-

Robert Quine born c1801 married as a Batchelor from Andreas to Eleanor Corlett of Ballaugh on 21st Oct. 1826 at Le.
In the presence of William Joughin and William Killip. The vicar was Henry Maddrell (Le)
She was the 31 year old spinster daughter of Daniel Corlett (Labourer) and Alice Myl(e)vorrey, both of Ballaugh.
It was claimed that their was issue and the family emigrated via Cleveland to Toledo Ohio USA.c1848
I understand that Eleanor (Elenor) was later in Illinois USA. (Here again outside our remit).

Peter.

PS you were correct in most of your assumptions posted however my father in law Robert Corlett of Andreas born 1881 and who never set foot outside the Parish of Kirk Andreas would pronounce his surname as “Kerlit”
The quoted origins and history of this surname and its various spellings that you posted have been freely available and circulated for many years
However it is news to my wife that although we all know about the association etc with the McCloud clan that Curleod although found written it (Corlett) was not known to be pronounced that way.

PPS I bought a One Inch Ordnance Survey Map of Great Britain “Isle of Man” Sheet 87 on cloth for seven shillings net in 1956 before going to the Island for a cycling week and still have it but cannot remember the name of the Stationer/Map sellers shop about halfway up Renshaw Street Liverpool.
Knowing of your interest in maps I wondered if you are old enough to know of it?
