Mark, I've been both ways to the Island from NZ, through Manchester and the most memorable was the approach by Ferry from Heysham which is just a short rail trip up from Manchester. The boat travels straight out into the Irish Sea and when the Green hills of the west coast of the IoM appear on the horizon, it's a wonderful sight, that one never forgets.
