I think I found John on 1880 census

as John Tehr aged 24 , Farmer, at Clarksville, Big Stone, born IOM

And this is him in 1900

John Taer age 51 , Born England
Cassie Taer 24, born Minnesota
Johnie Taer 2 , born Minnesota
Gracie Taer 0 born Minnesota

John is a Farmer , and is at Moonshine Township , Big Stone, he gives his year of Immigration as 1874.

Could not find him on 1890 census , although not all states were kept , but supposedly Minnesota was. I tried a stack of possible spellings
