Re: Duggan or gawne ancestors
In Response To: Duggan or gawne ancestors ()

Hello Marj

Yes, Sue has found the correct couple’s marriage.

I don’t know anything about Frank Stanley Duggan’s family, but Esther Catherine Gawne’s maternal uncle was my great grandfather, Thomas Kneen b 1846. ECG’s mother was Ann Kneen b 1835 and her father was Edwin Gawne b 1835.

Ann Kneen’s parents were Richard Kneen b 1803 and Eleanor Kermode b 1805.

The Kneen family farmed at Croit e Caley, Rushen, which is where Ann was born in 1835. Edwin Gawne spent some time in Australia in the 1850s, then returned to the IOM and married Ann just before the 1861 census. In that census, the newlyweds were staying with Ann’s parents at Croit e Caley farm ---- Edwin’s occupation was given as “retired gold digger”.

Ann and Edwin set up home at Ballawoods Farm, Malew, which is where Esther Catherine was born in 1871 (after the 1871 census).
