Re: Thomas Quayle Catharine Kirmeen

Hi Donna & Jan,

According to the Radcliffes' A History of Kirk Maughold, Ballaterson was farmed by Callow families until they sold it in the late 1700s. Thomas Quayle bought it in 1832. In 1793 It was advertised as "about 150 acres of exceedingly good arable, pasture and meadow land, capable of great improvements".
"When sold, the Callow quarterland was split, the present White House going to Robert Looney who afterwards re-sold to Thomas Quayle...."

They also wrote that many Quayle families originated in Lezayre. "Certainly the present White House family, and the Quayles of Ballakilley and Rhenabb ... originated in Lezayre."

There were Thomas Quayles, father and son, who owned part of Crowcreen along with Callows. Margaret, the granddaughter of John Callow (d.1702), married Thomas Quayle in 1700. Their only child Thomas 1700-1766 became Lockman of Maughold, and his only surviving child who became his heiress was daughter Ann (1741-1789). She married Peter Murray, so that ended the Quayle ownership there.

Your Ballaterson (White House) looks like the best bet, Donna, with ancestors from Lezayre, according to the Radcliffes.

These were the children of Thomas Quayle & Cath/Catharine Kirmeen in the Maughold Parish Register:

QUAYLE John [son of] Thomas Quayle/ Cath Kirmeen [bapt] Parish Church 7 Jun 1795
QUAYLE Thomas Thomas Quayle/ Cath Kirmeen Parish Church 8 Jul 1798
QUAYLE Robert Thomas Quayle/ Cath Kirmeen Parish Church 14 Jul 1805
QUAYLE Edward Thomas Quayle/ Cath Kirmeen Parish Church 22 Nov 1812
QUAYLE James Thomas Quayle/ Catharine Kirmeen Parish Church 24 Jul 1796
QUAYLE William Thomas Quayle/ Catharine Kirmeen Parish Church 31 Aug 1800
QUAYLE Jane Thomas Quayle/ Catharine Kirmeen Parish Church 2 Feb 1803
QUAYLE Ann Thomas Quayle/ Catharine Kirmeen Parish Church 13 Nov 1808

As Cath and Thomas were still alive in 1812 the year Edward was born, the most likely Maughold burial for Thomas seems to be:
Thomas QUAYLE aged 69 buried Maughold Mar 19 1841. (So shortly before the 1841 census, which makes sense as his eldest son John was farming the property.)

There is a will: QUAYLE, Thomas 1841 Mau A 52 0106249.

There are several Thomas Quayle bapts around 1772 in FamilySearch, but if the Radcliffes were correct the closest Lezayre one is 7 Feb.1773, son of James Quayle & Jane Sayle.
(Second son James named after him? And first daur Jane after Jane Sayle?)

Catharine QUAYLE 66 buried Maughold Sep 21 1836.
And a will: QUAYLE, Catharine 1836 Mau E 2 0106436
Could be Cathrine daur of James Kirmeen/Margaret Lawson bapt 30 Sep 1770.

Also a Cath QUAYLE 67 Ramsey buried Sep 11 1847, but if the Ballaterson Cath, where is she in 1841? I think the 1836 burial is more likely, unless she was with another of her children living in Ramsey. Maybe a M.I or the wills would sort that out?
