Update on CALLOW / KERRUISH Maughold

In 2009 I wrote that in father William Kerruish's will he "Bequeathed to his Loving wife Isabell Kerruish alias Christian... which stumped me for a long time because there was no Isabel Christian marriage to William Kerruish at that time, and no will [for first wife Isabel Kerruish als Callow], and no sign of an Isabel Christian of the right age in Maughold records. Joyce Oates, who has transcribed 100s of wills and summaries which are in Brian Lawson's wills' index and Manx Notebook, believes that the ‘als Christian’ was a scribe's error in William's will, because he was also writing about her daughter Isabel CHRISTIAN als Kerruish, and had ‘Christian’ combined with Isabel on his mind! And that it should have read Isabel Kerruish als CALLOW”.

Jim Smith has solved the problem and transcribed the will of Isabel Kerruish als Callow d. 1712, the first wife of William Kerruish. I had asked the MM whether there was a will for her at this date after finding her burial – answer no – but Jim explains that the will didn’t appear on BL’s index and that the top is eroded so that no name is clear.

This couple had two sons William, and I was interested to see one was known as William and the other as Willy.

Maughold burials:
Wm KERRUISH buried Dec 7 1728
Wm KERRUISH Bro to ye above Wm buried Dec 14 1728
Wm KERRUISH Apr 12 1730 [their father]
One of the William sons left a will – presumably the second one to die, because no mention of brother William/Willy.

Wife no.2 Isabel Kerruish als Christian (no marriage found) died in 1738 and left a will:
