origin of ij with a dot above each letter

I've encountered this construction several times transcribing documents. The most common is Faij, and Mylroij. In many cases, both the i and j have dots above them (as you might expect), but when they don't, they become Fay & Mylroy in most transcriptions. Are these Manx words or did they originate somewhere else in the world? having i & j together is rare in the English lexicon.
