Thanks for helping to clarify/confirm my thoughts on this. I had reasoned that William was likely to be the child of Jony and William married 1696/7 on the same basis that you used. I also had a copy of the Isabel Cotter will but had not made the connection on seeing William Howland's 1712 will on Jim Smith's site the other day, so now that all makes sense, and probably eliminates that branch from my main focus.

I'm also hoping to confirm the parents of the John Howland who married Cath Vandy in Bride 1744 (and Cath's parents, too, if possible). I thought that his parents could be Patrick Howland and Elizabeth Sayle. Elizabeth Howland als Sayle's will (1753-2 Bride E w 0106381) mentions her son John Howland and her daughter-in-law Kath Howland, but they are common names and I have not really found anything to verify the connection.
