I’ve used the IGI and imuseum site to look for baptisms of an Esther No Surname between 1872 and 1877 ---- can’t see any likely entry though.

Assuming that Esther Hannah Cannell b 1874 was telling the truth at her 1902 marriage in saying that her father was Thomas Cannell, then the only possibility is that she was the illegitimate daughter of Thomas Clague Cannell b 1847, given that Thomas Cannell b 1813 had claimed in 1881 that she was his granddaughter. Is it just coincidence that her fairly unusual combination of christian names were exactly the same as those of Thomas Clague Cannell’s future wife who lived close by ? Couldn’t this be explained by, for example, a temporary souring of relations between the Cannell and Quine families --- a sort of Romeo and Juliet scenario ---- with old age eventually easing the situation leading to John Quine permitting the couple to marry ?
