Re: Thomas Richard Corkill
In Response To: Thomas Richard Corkill ()

Hello Kathryn,

If you read through the thread which Lionel referred you to, you will find out all about your Corkills, who were a well-known Maughold family.

According to Constance Radcliffe (an expert on Maughold farming families, and IOM social history), there were two Corkill families farming in Ballajora in Maughold, and one family was identified by the nickname "Dick" to distinguish them from the many other Corkill families. She also said that several of the families who emigrated to the U.S. were so accustomed to the nickname "Dick" being added to their own name that they later added it to their names in public records, thinking that they had been baptised with both names. - Hence the "D", "Dick", or "Richard" which appears in some records, but not at their baptism.
