Re: thomas scarff - eleanor kewley

Sue, this confused me for a long time. This Eleanor Scarffe age 70 in 1841 seems likely to be Eleanor Gelling bp 6 Jan 1767 Lonan eldest d/o David Gelling & Bahee Christian (md Lonan1765, but both with Onchan connections). Eleanor is related to my Gelling lot (her brother John is my 3xg-g/f). Eleanor married William Scarffe in 1798 and their daughter Jane is the Jane Clucas in the entry.

Mary Christian age 6 months with Eleanor likely is the Mary Ann Christian bp 24 Jan 1841 Onchan d/o Wm Christian & Ann (Wm Christian md Ann Fell 26 Apr 1840). There is a family a few entries down at Ballacain that includes Wm Christian 35 Weaver and Ann Christian 30, plus a Fayle family. I can't figure out a connection, other than perhaps through Eleanor Scarffe/Gelling's mother Bahee Christian. Bahee was bp 1739 Onchan d/o Thomas Christian & Ann Cowin. Thomas Christian connects to the Ballakilmartin Christians, which just happens to be the address of this 1841 entry.

I haven't found a burial for Eleanor, but she is not in the 1851 census. There is a "Widow Scarff a pauper aged 80 years" buried at Lonan 11 Aug 1848 but I think this is Ann Scarff widow of Thomas.
