Re: Robert and Christian Caine
In Response To: Re: Robert and Christian Caine ()

John Caine was the son of Thomas Cain and Ann Crellin, daughter of Patrick Crellin and Jane Clucas. She was baptised in German parish which is the next parish over from Patrick. He grew up probably at Ballacosnahan farm and was designated as a senior grade farmworker in the census of 1851. He was still there but worked in the mines during the period 1850 to 1855. He most probably lived in the outbuildings of the farm. No information exists that his mother, a Crellin, was any relationship to the Crellin owners of Ballaconahan. His children were born at Ballacosnahan.

By the time the 1861 census, John had returned to farming, on his own account, at the eighty acres Creggan Ashen holding on the outskirts of Glen Maye opposite the Primutive Methodist Chapel and just before the point where the highways starts to descend steeply. The name Creggan Ashen comes probably from "Aittin" meaning gorse and Creggan meaning rocky, which would imply low grade land. The house is still standing and pictures of the house are in the file.

John Caine and Your Robert are in close proximity. I can not find a match in my files
