Re: James Kewley
In Response To: James Kewley ()

Hello John. James Kewley (1814-1866) is the younger brother of my g-g-grandmother Catharine Kewley, who married my g-g-grandfather William Gelling a shoemaker in 1832 St. Philips Liverpool. They are living in the same house in 1841; James would still be single at that time.

1841 census at Wentworth Court, Liverpool. HO107/560/13 10 pg 13 (306942)
Wm GELLING 30 Shoe Maker N
Catherine GELLING 30 N
Wm GELLING 7 Y
Margt GELLING 6 Y
Catherine GELLING 5 Y
Jemima GELLING 1 Y
(and in same address:)
James KEWLEY 20 Shoe Maker N [probably Catherine's brother b 1814]
John KINLEY 25 Shoe Maker N

James Kewley married Catherine Broadfoot 30 Jul 1844 at St. Catherine's Church Liverpool. William Gelling was one of the witnesses. It seems likely that the two families were close, with a common occupation. James and Catharine's older brother John Kewley (a witness to Wm & Cath'n's marriage) also was a shoemaker and married Margaret Taggart in the same church as Wm & Cath'n a month later. John and Margaret must have returned to the IOM soon after because all their children were born in Douglas.

John (bp 1808), Catharine (bp 1810) and James (bp 1814) were children of Charles Kewley (a barber and hairdresser) and Judith (Joney) Quayle, md 15 May 1798 Kirk Braddan. An older sister Margaret (bp 1803)married Thomas Cannell, a tailor, 1823 Kirk Braddan and was widowed in 1840. These were the only children of Charles & Judith who survived childhood. Charles died 1861 age 87 and Judith 1845 age 70.

Charles Kewley (1773-1861) was the son of Robert Kewley and Isabella Dawson, who md 18 May 1762 Braddan. Robert was a cooper. He died 1816 age 78 and Isabella in 1817 age 81. There is an MI at Braddan Old Church with the Christian names obliterated but the dates match Robert & Isabella. Other than some siblings, I don't know any more background on this Kewley family.

Judith (Joney) Quayle (bp 1774 Kirk Michael) is the d/o David Quayle and Joney (Judy) Cannell. Donna Douglas gave me quite a bit of background on this side of the family a number of years ago.

You may write me at egelling at shaw dot ca if you'd like more information.

Did you know that your g-grandfather William Broadfoot Kewley had a previous wife before Ellen Metcalf? He married Mary Quine December quarter 1871 Liverpool RD and they had one son William Edward in 1872 before Mary died in Dec quarter 1874 age 25. His marriage to Ellen Metcalf was December quarter 1875 and I have 6 children for them.

I hope this is helpful. If I did the math right, we are 4th cousins.
