Hello mfunari,

You need to search the WILLS and Land Records for your Looney Family.
These are available at the Manx Museum.

Frances - Editor of the Website – A Manx Note Book - www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/

has added the following information for Robert Looney of the American Colonies.

why assume Robert came from IoM - eg I have a deed - dated 7 jul 1715;Thomas Looney(Belfast, Antrim Ireland) sells for £9 10s to Wm Harrison(Cordiman) house in Ballasalla(both Abbey + Lds rent) fallen to me by death of uncle Francis Loony(Malew);witt Sylvester Cross, John Woods;court 7 Jul 1715
(sop far havn't found this Francis (a most unManx name usually at this period Irish)
+ there is at least one other deed that places related persons in Belfast around this time - Pensylvannia was a Puritan/Presbyterian state known to be attractive to those from North Ireland

since then I've been slowly working through the 20,000+ deeds in NSS + SSS - several more Looney deeds (some including the Wm Seresson ) are on my CD
There is also a Robert Looney in abbey cottages in Ballasalla in 1704 down for 2 properties
(1) an 8d rent being for halfe of a garden called Quailes garden compounded for in 1666 by Thomas Looney Fine then was 5s 4d yeares determined so to pay now and
(2) for 12d more for a house garden and croft near Ballasalley Cross compounded for in 1666 by Tho Looney Rushen for this and 1d intack of Lords land was 5s yeares determined so to pay now
thus it looks as tho this Ballasalla Looney family had links/origin? in Rushen

Hello Frances,
I have a few questions re the Land Deed below that you have found, and I have found ANOTHER Thomas Looney Malew, below,
Old deed Malew bundle 3 #56 - dated 7 jul 1715;Thomas Looney(Belfast, Antrim Ireland) sells for £9 10s to Wm Harrison(Cordiman) house in Ballasalla(both Abbey + Lds rent) fallen to me by death of uncle Francis Loony(Malew);witt Sylvester Cross, John Woods;court 7 Jul 1715 - links Franc/Francis into family
Is there a Burial or Will for Francis Looney ?
Is there a Burial or Will for Thomas Looney late of Castletown, the husband of Deborah Looney als Millner - husb alive; in 1711 ?
This land Deed, MAYBE links to the Thomas Looney (Belfast, Antrim Ireland) died in 1761- s/o thos looney + deborah als milnor
He had right by decease of fa + mo – left island some 47 yrs ago = 1714 - date of Land Deed.
1761-1 E d LOONEY Thomas d some time ago;s/o thos looney + deborah als milnor; had right by decease of fa + mo ;left island some 47 yrs ago;sis cath watkins als looney
And I have found another Thomas Looney in around the same time as - Thomas Looney and Deborah Millner
M.I. - 1711 Deb. Looney, April 19th, 72 – born, 1639
He is,
1714 A 7 LOONEY Thomas [castletown]dated 24 jan 1714/5;ch thos, elizth (?out of isle), cath jt execs;wife alive;uncle thomas looney;claims;account of arrears in salary book + some problems re Mr Parker receiver genl;+inv
M.I. 1714 Thomas Looney, buried January 27th, 60 – born, 1654
FAMILY – Thomas Looney b. 1654 - 1714
I
Children,
Thomas.....Elizabeth.....Catherine
We have an Uncle, Thomas Looney – is he a Brother to, Francis Looney ?

Re Thos + Franc/Francis - yes think they were bros - interesting marriages in Andreas 17150720 - Thomas Looney + Cath Jick with TL of Belfast parish + CJ of Magheragall in county of Antrim Ireland both of Manks parents

Now why should this couple marry in Andreas ! - the register implies both were born off Island
on a more prosaic note Thomas Looney is noted in Lib Irr (book of commissions etc) as a part-time soldier and a thomas Looney + a Ewan/Huan Looney seem to be involved in all major bits of carpentry for the Lord in 1711-1720 period
there are a couple of interesting entries in index to presentments for Malew inc a Martin Looney involved in an illegal marriage in 1690 (vicar John Cosnahan also is mentioned) - however need to look at actual film as name Martin doesn't seem to come up anywhere else and may be a misread
