Re: Daniel & Jane Quayle

Hi David,

In the Maughold parish register and also in censuses "Gill" and "Killey" were used interchangeably. e.g. Gill in one census and Killey in the next for the same family. Also "Gill" in the list of defuncts on a wills film, but Killey in the actual will, or vice versa. So I wondered whether the word was actually Killey rather than Kelley in the Lezayre record?

Secondly, with the confusing new IGI entries, have you noticed that on the bapt lists they record children on the left-hand-side of the entry with father's surname followed by mother's surname on the same line? Which makes the children look as though they have the mother's surname with father's surname as a middle name?

On the left:
Danl Quayle Mcknight

On the right:
parent Edmund Quayle, Ellin Mcknight
name Danl Quayle Mcknight
event Christening
event date12 Aug 1819
event place Andreas, Isle of Man
gender Male
father Edmund Quayle
mother Ellin Mcknight
digital folder number004505051

I checked the record of one of my Andreas ancestors whose parents were definitely married, and he is recorded the same way.

I don't know whether this applies to all parishes.
