I am Norma Starkey's daughter - she was Theresa Emily's last daughter and I know that your Dad was known as Hoppy because when he was little, all the kids were obsessed with Westerns and when they used to play Cowboys and Indians, Gerald was alwasy Hopalong Cassidy - so he was known as Hoppy for short.
