Re: Thomas Mathew Craine
In Response To: Thomas Mathew Craine ()

Hello Rebecca

I found your archived message about Thomas Mathew Craine whilst looking at his daughter in law, Sarah Jane Webster b 1866, whose great aunt married a Manxman, Edward Gelling, in 1863. I was trying to discover whether there was a family link between EG and TMC.

None of the trees on Ancestry which include TMC seems to have details for his parents, apart from stating that his father was Thomas Craine, so I've done some digging and may now have the answer. By piecing together IGI entries from IOM and Wigtown, Scotland, plus information from Frances's Manx Note Book and some MIs, I believe that TMC was the son of Commander Thomas Crane RN and Margaret nee Kirk/Quirk. Margaret was a widow when she married TC in 1817. Her first husband was John McMaster whom she married in 1807.

TC and Margaret had at least 3 children, TMC b 1818, Margaret b 1820 and John Lee Crane b 1821. Margaret b 1820 married landowner John Moore of Pulrose.

Copied from Moores of Pulrose/Manx Families/Manx Note Book:

"John of Pulrose (born 1818, died 1865, buried at Braddan) married Margaret Daughter of Captain Thomas Craine, R.N. in 1846, and had issue John (obit young), Effie (died young), and Marion, the heiress, married in 1869 Bell Graham Williams. Thus the property of Pulrose, after being in the Moore family for 344 years, passed away from them."

Your direct ancestor's prosperous life in Australia (emigrated in 1850s ?) would fit well with the Manx/Scots Crane family outlined above. The birth year discrepancy between his tombstone information and the 1818 IGI entry seems insignificant.

I'll paste below all the IGI entries relating to TMC and his parents and siblings.
