Re: Thomas Gelling. Born 1769 Braddan

Thomas Gelling married Elizabeth Kelly 19 May 1798 Braddan. He was buried 19 Jan 1853 Marown aged 84 and Elizabeth 15 May 1836 Braddan aged 66. I don't have parents for Elizabeth Kelly. I have 9 children for Thomas & Elizabeth:
1. John bp 24 Feb 1799 Braddan. Good fit to be the one who married Jane Cannell 27 Mar 1824 Braddan (8 children), and buried 30 May 1886 Lonan age 87. He was a lead ore miner at Laxey. Jane buried 15 Aug 1883 Lonan age 80.
2. Margaret bp 2 Nov 1800 Braddan and buried 26 Feb 1888 Marown age 89. Did not marry.
3. Thomas bp 27 Jun 1802 Braddan. Good fit to be the one who married Elizabeth Craine 10 Jan 1824 Braddan (8 children), and buried 13 June 1869 Braddan aged "69" of Kirk Patrick. Farmer at Ballamoore, Kirk Patrick. Elizabeth buried 12 Dec 1874 Braddan age 78 of Kirk Patrick.
4. William bp 25 Mar 1804 Braddan. Good fit to be the one who married Margaret Cowin 3 Sep 1831 Braddan (11 children) and buried 14 Aug 1890 Braddan age 86. Joiner and butcher at Kiondroghad Onchan in 1841 and at Douglas after. Margaret buried 1 Mar 1878 Braddan age 72.
5. Robert bp 16 Mar 1806 Braddan. Married Eleanor Kinley 16 Jul 1836 Lonan (5 children plus one that Eleanor had before marriage). Buried 25 May 1845 Lonan age 39 (burial says 38). Eleanor was buried 13 Oct 1869 Lonan age 55
6. James bp 10 Jan 1808 and buried 30 Mar 1835 Braddan age 27 unmarried.
7. Elizabeth bp 5 Nov 1809 Braddan. 2 children by Thomas Lace but not married. Alive 1881 in Patrick. Possibly matches a Marown burial 30 Apr 1884 age 73.
8. Edward bp 15 Mar 1812 Braddan. Married Isabella Quayle 17 Aug 1839 Patrick (8 children). Lived at Marown, Malew and then Patrick by 1861. Buried 15 Apr 1889 Marown (of Foxdale) age 78. Isabella died between 1851 and 1861 but I haven't found her burial.
9. Richard bp 16 Apr 1815 Braddan and likely is the one buried 7 Sep 1843 age 29 unmarried.

Thomas Gelling was almost certainly the son of John Gelling and Margaret Caroon who married 28 Feb 1767 Braddan. There's no IGI baptism for him but he fits to about 1769. I wonder if the 22 Jan 1769 baptism of "Jane" Gelling to those parents is an error and should have been Thomas. A Jane was born later to this couple and there really isn't room for another child between any of the known children. John & Margaret had either 8 or 9 children (depending on the Thomas/Jane dilemma). John was bapt 4 Oct 1741 Marown and died 31 May 1822 of Ballacaine, Braddan age 80. Margaret was bapt 20 Feb 1742/43 (d/o John Caroon & Catharine Brew md 8 Aug 1741 Andreas) and was buried 12 Aug 1781 aged about 38 leaving children aged 14 to 1. I'm not aware of a second marriage for John though it would seem there should be one.

John bp 4 Oct 1741 was the son of John Gelling and Ann Fayle who married about 1732 likely Marown (registers missing pre 1733). They had 9 children. John Gelling of Ballig was buried 1 Feb 1784 Marown age 79 and Ann 31 Dec 1791 Marown probably about 80. Their youngest was Robert (1753-1815) who was schoolmaster of Marown for 40 years. We have often called this clan the "Schoolmaster Gellings" and you can find earlier discussions on this Board.

John Gelling of Ballig was bp 18 Oct 1705 Braddan illegitimate son of John Gelling (bd 25 Feb 1732/33) of Ballamillaghyn (Braddan) by Ann Kneale (bd 27 Feb 1713/14 Braddan). John Sr's wife was Susanna Moore (bd 6 Jun 1731 Braddan), and their legitimate son John (1690 - 1736/37) and his wife Ann Moore, through son John G (1722-1812) & Catharine Killey of Ballamillaghyn have a huge tree of descendants.
