Thomas and John Cain, Onchan, early 1800s

Looking for information about sons of Thomas Cain and Ann Killip, baptized at St. George, Douglas. John Cain was baptized September 30, 1810, and perhaps died before 1813, as he was not mentioned in his father’s will. (His burial has not yet been located.)

Thomas Cain was baptized June 5, 1813. (No further record has been located.)

Thomas Cain, the father of John and Thomas, had married at Lonan, November 16, 1809, Ann Killip, daughter of William Killip and Jane Kewley. Thomas Cain was perhaps the son of James Cain, baptized at Onchan, August 9, 1795, although I haven’t located any proof for this.

Thomas died only four years after his marriage to Ann Killip; record of Thomas Cain’s burial is found in both the Onchan and Braddan parish registers, at Onchan, June 29, 1813. His will was heard at Douglas, July 3, 1813, and does not mention his son John.

“This is affirmed to be the last will and testament of Thomas Cain stone mason of the town of Douglas, deceased, who was weak in body but of sound and disposing mind, memory, and understanding at the making hereof. He commended his soul to the mercy of Almighty God and his body to Christian burial. As to his disposable Effects he left and Bequeathed the same in manner following.
That is to say, respecting his wife Ann Cain alias Killip being in a State of pregnancy at the making hereof he left and bequeathed “unto that which is unseen” (meaning the child of which his wife was pregnant) five shillings, and constituted and appointed his Dear loving and beloved wife Ann Cain aforesaid to be whole and sole executrix of all the rest of his effects whether Goods or money and of this his last will and testament.

Witnesses: Dan’l Cain and James Cowin”

Ann Killip Cain married, second, at Lonan, April 1821, John Skillicorn, son of John Skillicorn and Margaret Corrin. She died in 1871, and her will does not mention a son Thomas Cain.
