S or F

I am having some trouble discerning the difference between Sayle and Fayle in the transcription of several Wills. Within the same document the surname is spelled either with a capital S or a double f as in "ff". Would the double "ff" simply be a method of capitalization or does it in some way represent a Capital "S"?
I am sure I have seen this explained in the past and would appreciate any assistance.
