David, you wrote that his first marriage was in 1857 to Mary Ellen Ryan who died in 1879. Where did this marriage and death take place, and did the marriage record show how long he had been in the state, if in Australia?

This certainly reduces his time of arrival from between 1851 and 1885 to the time of the marriage unless it was in England or elsewhere?
