In Response To: Will of William kELLY 1790 ()

Hello Adrienne. - Your search for William's wife.

William was heir to Balladda. His parents and the parents of his intended bride, are likely to have drawn up a Marriage Contract on behalf of their son and daughter.
The contract will give the name of the prospective bride-groom and the names of both of his parents, including (usually) the maiden name of the mother
Similar information is given regarding the bride and her parents.
In addition to the usual wedding donations - kitchen utensils - linen - bedding and farm implements - a named parcel of quarterland or intack would sometimes be given.
The marriage contract was registered in the Northside Sales and the Southside Sales and the contracts are on film in the Manx Museum
People tended to marry within their own social circle. There may also be a contract relating to William's daughter Margaret and Thomas Fargher.
