Re: Elizabeth Caine m. John Brew

Hi Kathy, When you copy and paste the links to the Explorer bar you need to then close the space in "ht tp" at the beginning. We can't write ht tp on the board without the space because it attracts numerous spam messages. Please try this and let me know if you still can't get the connections?

This is the beginning of the submission by Marilyn Robinson of Greenbrae, California:

Brews of Ballaugh

1. Philip Brew born 5 December 1686 in Andreas (sic) and died 8 January 1757 in Ballaugh. He married Margaret CURLET (or McElroy? or McYlroy or Mylroy) in Ballaugh on 16 December 1712. Their children were:

Isabel, born 27 October 1712
Jane, born 1 May 1716 and married John COWLEY in Ballaugh on 28 October 1728
Catherine, born 6 April 1718 and died 7 April 1718
Mary, born 13 Oct 1719 and married Thomas CORLET in Ballaugh on 4 July 1742
William, born 25 July 1725 and married Catherine LOONEY in Onchan on 19 January 1754

2. William and Catherine LOONEY (She was born 2 March 1724/5 in Onchan, her father was Gilchrest LOONEY, and she died 15 February 1773.) Their children were:

Margaret, born 18 August 1759 and married Daniel COWLEY at Ballaugh, Bishops Court on 15 July 1783
Robert, born 9 February 1761 and died 26 May 1833. He married Elinor COWLEON 13 June 1787
They had 2 children: Robert, born 13 November 1805, and John, born 8 January 1809 who married Elizabeth CAINE on 3 September 1831 and had 5 children)
William, born 4 April 1763
Elizabeth, born 11 August 1765
Philip, born 1 November 1767 and died 9 Dec 1839

3. Philip Brew married Ann CASTELL on 5 April 1805. Their children were: [etc.]
...................

I should add that she is almost certainly wrong about 1.Philip Brew being the one who is in the IGI as bapt.Andreas 5 Dec.1686. She has no evidence that he moved from Andreas to Ballaugh and there are several contenders in the Andreas families who are far more likely to be this Philip. She has chosen him (as others have) because he is the only one at that time in the IGI, except for Philip son of Philip bapt Andreas 1688 who is also claimed by an Andreas family who have siblings recorded before and after his bapt.

J.A.Brew has "Philip of the Lhen (born ca.1640?) whose son and heir Philip (born ca.1686) was of the Lhen in 1719.."
and
"Philip "of Wallett", 1686-1758, married Bridget Camaish of Jurby 1723, was of Conneh bwee in 1729". [I think he is most likely to be the one with the bapt recorded on 5 December 1686, son of Philip, because his siblings also had recorded bapts before and after Philip - and double-checked in wills.]

This is part of the work of the late J.A.Brew:
Parish of Ballaugh (St. Mary)

Christian Ine Brew paid 6d for a farm of waste and 2d amercement as tenant of part of the Lord's Closes in 1515.

A family of Brews from Jurby came to Ballaugh in the 17th century. They flourished at Glion Moar, a small croft. One of their descendants, Juan Brew, bought Scroundal Mill in 1770. He was traditionally author of "Yn Bollan Bane" and a descendant of Mollycharane the Miser. The Brews sold the mill in 1830.

Adjoining the Scroundal Mill was the Brew property of Ballacurnkiel, part of the Bishop's demesne, where they farmed until at least the end of the century. William Brew owned 21 acres of Ballacurnkiel in 1867 and John Brew had 4 acres at Carmodil-beg.

Robert Brew died at Ballaugh in 1827, aged 21, and William Brew was "buried alive" at Ballaugh in 1934 (Isle of Man Examiner, 21 September 1934).
