Re: Paul and Eleanor Taggart m 1815 children?

Hi David

I'm interested in how you know that your great great grandfather, Thomas Taggart, was the Thomas Taggart bap 8th June 1817 Malew to Paul Taggart and Eleanor Quayle. Do you have documents which give this information, or a family bible perhaps ?

If you've definitely got the right parents for your Thomas, then, yes, Thomas did have siblings, and quite a bit is known about them.

Since you say that your Thomas emigrated to Australia in 1845, he should show up in a British census in 1841 (unless he'd departed from the British Isles pre 1841 and had spent some time elsewhere eg South Africa, before moving on to Australia)

There are 3 men named Thomas Taggart in the right age group in 1841 in the IOM and England.

A)

1841

England, Cheshire, Bidstone, district 7, image 2

Thomas Taggart 20 journeyman b "F" (foreign parts---ie not in England, Scotland or Ireland. It's possible that he was born in the IOM)

He's in a dwelling with a carpenter's family, all b Cheshire.

But this Thomas Taggart turns up in Liverpool in 1851, age 31, lodger, unmarried, joiner and builder.

So that rules him out, since you say that your Thomas went to Australia in 1845.

B)

1841

TAGGART Thomas 25 Arbory 1463/3 31 23

Arbory 2/12

Ballavarkish ?

Name Age
Robert Taggart 70
Anne Taggart 65
Thomas Taggart 25
Richard Taggart 20
Jane Stephens 15

Robert is a farmer.

The 20 yr old Richard Taggart is probably the one baptised 17 Jan 1819, Arbory to Robert Taggart and Ann Kewley.

Since no relationships were given in 1841, it's hard to say whether the 25 yr old Thomas was a son or not.

C)

Thomas Taggart, tailor:

1841

TAGGART Thomas 23 Malew 1464/4 6 6

1851

TAGGART Thomas 32 Malew 2526 88 55

This Thomas Taggart married Jane Cooil in 1838 and stayed on the island. I don't know who his parents were. In 1851, he says he was born in Malew.

So, having ruled out A) and C), the only possibilities are:

a) your Thomas is B)

or

b) your Thomas had left the British Isles pre 1841 census

or

c) he's there, but I haven't found him.

Does anyone know who were the parents of C) ? I suspect that they were Thomas Taggart (a tailor) and Jane Curphey.
