Re: Radcliffe family
In Response To: Re: Radcliffe family ()

I had not realized there was a Radcliffe's of Andreas book-I will try and find it and order it. This site has been so amazingly helpful, although I still have questions.

My grandmother was a Radcliffe whose family came from the Isle of Man. We are supposedly of the Ballakelly Radcliffes from Andreas. The awesome link that I found starts with her father Fredrick Radcliffe, born in Canada, where his grandparents immigrated in 1827 bringing his then 1 year old father William with them. Here is the link.../www.isleofman.com/heritage/Genealogy/Genealogy/GedcomFiles/Radcliffes/I431.asp

The research is fantastic, but I cannot figure out how the family ties into the Ballakelly Radcliffes. At the end of the line there is a John Radcliffe whose father is listed as William Radcliffe b. abt 1580, mother Mally Christian and a John Radcliffe who has a John and William as sons, no birth or death dates and no documentation.

Can anyone tell me with which person we connect to the Ballakelly Radcliffes? I'm very confused on that point. I have been reading about the quarterlands, and intacks, treens, etc as well as different offices that were held on the island. I think I have probably confused myself.

Were the Ballakelly Radcliffes y Sundher? Are we Ballakelly Radcliffes because John's son William in 1601 was (quote)entered for a tenement and a quarter of land in the treen of Leodest at 20- rent, being the farm of Ballakelly?(end quote) (from the Story of an Old Manx Northside Family-Radcliffe y Sundher of Andreas by R. Cunliffe Shaw)? Do any of these northside Radcliffes actually tie in with my Radcliffes? If anyone can help clear up my confusion, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, does anyone know when they came to the island and where they originated?

Thank you.
