Re: Gilbert and other CHRISTIANs Andreas
In Response To: Re: to Averill ()

Hello Averil, You will remember that David Christian (IOM FHS treasurer) wrote a series of articles about this family in the FHS mag (2004/05) after the owner of Ballacottier Farm, Andreas, discovered Gilbert Christian's gravestone lying face-down as part of the floor in a cow house. The MI said he d.20 May 1787 aged 66, and David added that he was bapt 2 April 1721 in Andreas, son of John Christian.

In case other people haven't seen these articles, as well as describing how/why the gravestone got there, David wrote in subsequent mags that Gilbert's wife was Mary Corkill, dau of Wm Corkill of Lostey Craig, and that Gilbert's father John Christian was of Kk Bride at his marriage to Joney SKINNER at Andreas, 27 Nov.1718.

For father John Christian he suggested the bapts John son of John Christian bapt 23 Feb.1696/7 Bride; John son of Patrick Christian bapt 17 Jan.1698/9 Bride; or John son of Ewan Christian bapt 13 April 1699 Bride. He put transcriptions in the mag of the 1774 will for John, and the 1753 will for his wife Joney (Skinner), with explanations about his known children. The Radcliffes mentioned in the will were from the Belfast, Andreas, branch. Son William Christian bapt 1731 Andreas married Joney KILLIP in 1774 - her second marriage. Her first marriage was to another William Christian who d.1773 and who was also son of a John Christian, weaver (my family) who also had links with Bride.

To attempt to differentiate between the two weaver fathers John Christian in Andreas at that time, when only the father was usually named in the register, "my" John married Averick CRAIN in Andreas on 12 Feb.1722/23.
Their children were:
?John son of John Christian bapt 27 Jan 1722/23; son of John Christian buried 5 Jan 1724.
Jony daughter of Jon Christian bapt 8 Nov.1724, marr. William CLEATER 1754, d.1762?
Richd son of John Christian bapt 26 Sept 1726, marr.Ellinor TEARE 1761 with consent of parents. He d.1803 [will]; she d.1802 [will].
Margaret Daur of John Christian & Averick Crain bapt 3 March 1728/29. Margt a young child of John Christian bury’d 11th March 1728/29.
William son of John Christian (BallaCoary) bap 11 May 1730, died 24 Sept.1773 [decree].
Christian Daur of Jon (Balla-coary) bapt 28 Jan.1732/33, marr.Philip TEARE 1754 (Bignal), d.1795?
Charles Son of John Christian & Affrick Crain bapt KK Bride 5 June 1736, buried (Son of John Christian) 25 Jan.1742/43 Andreas. "This year by reason of ye Long Drought was attended with a Great Dearth, so that a bowl of Barley sold at Thirty & two shillings ....".
?John Son of Jon Baptizd in KK Bride 16 Nov 1738. Jon (Infant) Son of Jon Xtian Bury’d Feb.10th [1738/39].

The above relationships are supported by several documents, including:
Bill of Sale Andreas 1765 “I William Christian of the parrish of KK Andrews and Joney Christian als Killip my wife… sell to Richard Christian of sd parish all the right title property and interest that we now have or hereafter may can or ought to have…. in a parcel of Quarterland in sd parrish known by the name of Ballchirrim Maur adjoining at ye East End to Ballakemain on the South Side to Ballneseir at the West end to Wm Christian’s Land & on the North to Ballagaive….. October 2nd 1765”.

William CHRISTIAN, Andreas, 11 Nov. 1773 decree notes:
William Christian died 24 Sept. last. His five children were John, Cath, Ellinor, Jane, and Joney Christian "... who being all underage their uncles by the father's side namely Richard Christian, Philip Tear, & Wm Cleater sworn supervisors.."
Further documents dated 1784 show Catherine married Christopher Looney "received from William Christian their stepfather". Also rec. their legacies between 1784 and 1790 were John, Elinor, Jane Christian. John Garrett and Ellinor Christian were co-execs of Joney Christian a daughter of Wm Christian, and rec. her share of their father's legacy in 1791.
The inventory ran to 5 pages, totalling about £40.
Joney KILLIP married second William CHRISTIAN [the stepfather, above] Andreas 8 Oct.1774, and had two further sons Willm 1775 and Robt 1778.

Parents John Christian (d.1771 Will) & Averick Crain (d.1774 Will & Deed) marry’d 12 Feb 1722/23. John Christian was the son of Richard CHRISTIAN d.1723 [Will], and Margaret HOWLAND, of Bride, d. 1719/20 [Will] (daur of Isabel HOWLAND als COTTER Will 1696/97). Richard CHRISTIAN’s parents? Thomas: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/twill/1689_002.html & Ann CALLOW: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/twill/1676_001.html
Wife Averick Crain (d.1774 Will & Deed) was daur of Phinlo Crain of Jurby d.1725 who marr. 1.Bahey KELLEY; 2.Bahee Cannell d.1740 [will].
