Manx Genealogy

Re: James & Agnes Bowcock at Onchan.

Agnes Bowcock was born Agnes Mary Rae on 26th January 1897 at Nethermains, near Annan, Dumfriesshire. She was the elder child of James Rae, gamekeeper, and Elizabeth Jardine, a great aunt of my wife. Her younger brother James Sydney Rae, known as Sydney, was born on 4th July 1900, also near Annan.

The Raes lived for a time in Dumfries, before migrating south to Manchester, where Agnes married William H. Beaumont in 1925. I do not know what became of William, but in 1945 Agnes embarked on a 2nd marriage, to James Bowcock, also at Manchester. She was still there in 1948 when she registered the death of her mother Elizabeth (Jardine) Rae. I never found what became of her father James Rae. Perhaps he went to live with her on the IOM and died there.

As to Sydney, he was married twice. There was a son by the 2nd marriage. If there were 2 sons on the IOM then I guess they must have been by the 1st. As I found no evidence in the English or Scottish indexes of children to his 1st wife, Elizabeth McCourty, perhaps these 2 boys were born on the IOM.
