Use of Term "Master"

While transcribing Wills during the period 1720 to 1800, I have come upon the term "Master" as in bequeathing something to "My Master", on a few occasions. It is usually the Will of a married man with family and the legacies can be quite similar to what he leaves his children or friends. I am wondering what type of relationship exists between a Manx man of that generation and someone he refers to as "Master". Often the Masters name is not included. Can it be similar to an apprentice to a tradseman, or a worker on a farm? Interested in any responses.
