hilly - the mines would have a large chimney for the steam driven winding gear etc - the steam engines housed in a nearby stone built building (many of these still exist though the mine shafts are now safely capped - a nearby spoils heap all mostly removed but the surrounding area will still be bereft of vegetation - the miners could live some distance away (eg Foxdale - see manxnotebook or Glen Maye for glen rushen - both are basically ribbon development along a road (both places now considerably altered but old property still mostly there - both strongholds of methodism so pubs and drunkeness not really tolerated.
