I wonder if "Togman" means that this is the way the name Taubman was pronounced back then. If James and William Quilliam had never learned to read or write and had no concept of letter sounds or the appearance of the written word "Taubman", then the first generation to become literate may have never had the opportunity to learn the spelling of the name and hence just wrote down the version which sounded like the name they'd grown up knowing as James's mother's.

Can someone tell me if this is how Taubman is pronounced nowadays ? In my head, I've been pronouncing it Toe-b-man.
