Re: Joseph Faragher son of John F & Margt Gelling

Len's 2003 note in the early part of this string, now reappearing in the BB, caused me to look at the 1851 census for Rhenny with new eyes. Aha! It explains why old John Gelling 87 and wife Elizabeth 84 of Ballamillaghyn Braddan are at German in their old age. They are immediately above John Faragher and Margaret (parents of Joseph Faragher) at Rhenny in the census, so probably they are now being looked after by their daughter and son in law. They died in 1854 and 1855 respectively leaving considerable sums to the Faraghers and completely leaving out some grandchildren who contested the will. This fascinating will (transcribed by Kay Clegg) is on the will site.

John & Elizabeth had 8 sons and 2 daughters, with 8 of them dying between the ages of 21 and 38, and only Margaret and the youngest Philip surviving (he inherited Ballamillaghyn). Their eldest John (1787-1825) married Mary Ann Costain 1809 and had children but only John (1818-1902, md Margaret Jane Cottier 1841) survived; he is one of those who contested. The other daughter Elizabeth married to Thomas Craine and had son Thomas before she died; he is the other contester.

John & Elizabeth also had a grandson Edward, mentioned in their will, who is the 35 year old Edward Gelling living with the Faraghers. I don't know who he belonged to, but I'm guessing it's the 2nd son Edward (1790-1827). Edwd Jr is not in the IGI, nor a marriage for Edwd Sr, but I think it's a better fit than anybody else.

I looked for John Gelling 48 Miller, Alice 41 wife and Margaret Jane 2 (listed by Len as being in Rhenny), but they are not at Rhenny. The place name for them looks like "Renass". John's baptism ca 1800-01 isn't in the IGI either, but he likely is the eldest son of Robert Gelling of Ballaclaugh (1835 will) and Anne Kelly (md 1800) and grandson of Robert Gelling (miller) & Jane Kelly of Ballagrawe. John Gelling and the above Margaret Faragher als Gelling were 2nd cousins.

A minor nit in Len's note: Robert Faragher is 18 (not 16) in the 1851 census and he is the Tailor (not 16 y/o James).
