John was the son of Thomas Callow and Ann Jane Kaighin. Ann died 1871 and was buried in Jurby. Thomas married Isabella Jane Kneale later that year. They are both buried in Andreas.

In the 1881 census John is with his grandparents at Ballacallum in Andreas. Thomas Callow married Elizabeth Kneen 1840, she was from Malew.
