Manx Genealogy

Frank Edmondson of the MER

Hi,

I am still working on Manx Electric Railway research, and thanks to various leads, the Barnes story has come along well, and that inspired me to look at his predecessor, Frank Edmondson, and I would welcome some help.

Frank Edmonsdon was shown in the 1901 IOM census as 25 yrs old, and was married to 23 y o Florence M A
Lawson's records show that on 30 April 1898, Frank Edmondson married Florence Tambaci, which sure ain’t a Manx name !!! I can find no Tambaci family in the1901 IOM census, but in the 1891 census there is a family

Florence Tambaci (29) and seemingly the following children, Florence M (13) Beatrice (10), Mary C (9), Aileen (4) and George N (1). Lawson does not list any Tambaci burials, so I assume the husband was away at the time.

The 1881 UK census lists a family at Heath Bank House, Cheadle Cheshire, that includes Florence Tambaci (19); Caralambros Tambaci (30) an “Indian Merchant”, and Florence Mary Tambaci (3) . Caralambros is shown as being born in Manchester, whilst Florence 19, and Florence M ar eboth shown as British subjects born in India. The head of the household is 56 y o Mary Tambaci. A India Merchant’s widow who was born in Wrexham. There is also a baby called Beatrice, 9mo old, so it is pretty clear that this 1881 Cheadle family is the 1891 IOM family and that this is the girl that Frank Edmondson married

IF ANYONE CAN ADD ANY FURTHER NOTES ON THAT, EG WHERE FLORENCE (1) CAME FROM, THAT WOULD BE GREAT. I gather that Tambaci is a name of Italian origin, so we have a young Mancunian merchant, Caralambros, the son of an India merchant of Italian extraction, and a Welsh mother, marrying a girl who was born in India, Florence Mary being their eldest daughter.

Also – THE next POINT.

MER Staff Records for 1931 show a Miss V Edmondson as Cashier at MER head office. There is a distinct likelihood that she is related to Frank Edmondson, and most probably a daughter. Can anyone comment on any family that Frank Edmondson and Florence Tambaci had. Frank was buried at Braddan 26 Jan 1936, whilst Florence Mary Adelin was bd 5 May 1956. There was a small boy 2yrs 6 mo Charles Morris Edmondson bd Braddan 1 Aug 1908, but without seeing the Memorial inscription I have no idea if he was related at present, or where Miss V Edmonson fits in.

Robert
