Hi Sue,

Thanks for your reply :)

I have traced Mary Ann VERNON nee CORLETT from Australia, finally found her mentioned in the 1881 census, it says she was born in Ramsey, Isle of Man in about 1848 aged 33yrs at time of census, she was living in Openshaw, Lancashire , married to John VERNON (b. 1849) in 1879 in Chorlton, they had two children then Alice Ann (b. 1879 - 2yrs at time of census) in Barrow in Furness and Edith Elizabeth (b. 1880) in Openshaw, they emigrated to Australia on the ship Camorta and arrived 17/6/1882.

I would love to get further back with her history, but am unsure where to go next... I will have a look at your suggestions, thanks so much!!! Please feel free to add any more as I am very new to all of this.... I can add the link to the 1881 census if they let you place links up.
