Might he have gone over to Germany to visit relatives when Mary Ann died in 1881, then met a French woman, Agnes, had 2 children, and then decided that he'd return to his family in Liverpool ?
All pure speculation,
Helena married Paul Collister in 1895, and in 1901, she's using the name Selina, and 2 of her sisters are living with her.
