Barry, I've found your John Craling age 36 with wife Ann Hipkiss and mother in law, also 2 children and Edward Craling age 18 (brother) in Dudley in 1851

This is the 2 year old Elanor Craling in the 1851 Tower St household : Staffordshire, Dudley, district 1z, page 26.

I can't see this Edward Crellin / Mary Ann / Edward age 7 in the IOM 1841 census index, so I looked in England and found this family:

Then I looked for the absent father, Edward, in the death index (no), IOM burial index (no), and the 1841 England census. The mystifying thing is that there is a 30 year old Edward Crellin, blacksmith, in the infirmary in Liverpool as a patient, who could easily be Mary Ann's husband. The page is: Lancashire, Liverpool, Mount Pleasant, District Liverpool Infirmary, page 3.

I'm wondering whether the relationship between John age 36 and Edward age 18 in the 1851 household in Dudley, should be "brother's son", not "brother".

Or I might have got completely the wrong Edward
