Re: Clybane House, Braddan
In Response To: Re: Clybane House, Braddan ()

Hello Ernest

We don't have any information on Thomas Clague's dates of birth or death, only speculation at present. In the 1841 census he said he was a 55 year old stone mason and that Eleanor's age was 50. Eleanor's was the correct rounded-down version of 53. If Thomas's was correct, that would mean a birth year of anything from 1782 to 1786.

This is Eleanor's baptism from the IGI:

There were 2 couples called Robert Gelling and Jane Kelly who were producing children at this time in Marown:

Couple (1) married in 1770 and had their children between 1771 and 1787. Robert died in 1807 and Jane died in 1808.

Couple (2) married in 1780 and had their children between 1781 and 1795. Jane died in childbed at the birth of Charles in 1795. Robert then married Alice Cowley in 1799, and several more children were born before Robert died in 1815.

If you use the "search" facility on this site, you'll find heaps of messages relating to these couples. The Robert in couple (2) was a schoolmaster.

The Robert who was the father of Eleanor Gelling b 1787 was from couple (1) and he was from the Braddan Ballamillaghyn family of millers. Robert's parents were John Gelling 1722-1812 and Catherine Killey, approx 1712-1806. Robert wasn't the eldest son, so he moved from Ballamillaghyn, Braddan, to Ballagrawe, Marown. He was buried in the churchyard at Old St Runius, Marown. This is his MI:
